Much has been written in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti smoking law in Britain. Things have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested massive tax cuts to assist in keeping the industry afloat. However will the net variation of this classic game offer a lifeline, or will it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar kin?
Bingo is an familiar game normally played by the "blue haired" generation. However the game lately had seen a recent increase in acceptance with younger people deciding to visit the bingo halls rather than the clubs on a Friday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the enacting of the cigarette ban all over UK.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public areas will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favored places where people like to puff on cigarettes.
The effects of the smoking ban can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already forbidden in the bingo parlours. Players have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where did all the players go? Certainly they have not forgotten this enduring game?
The answer is on the internet. People realize that they can play bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a beer and cigarette and still enjoy big prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the net could never replace the collective part of going over to the bingo parlour, but for a group of people the governing edicts have left a number of bingo players with little alternative.
