Much has been reported in the press not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in the UK. Conditions have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for huge tax breaks to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However does the net adaptation of this quintessential game present a reprieve, or might it never compare to its land based equivalent?

Bingo has been an enduring game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had experienced a recent increase in acceptance with younger people deciding to visit the bingo parlours instead of the clubs on a weekend. All this is about to change with the enforcement of the smoking ban throughout England and Wales.

No longer will enthusiasts be allowed to smoke whilst marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 all public locations will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most favorite places where people like to smoke.

The effects of the anti cigarette law can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already barred in the bingo halls. Profits have plunged and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for to stay alive. But where did all the players go? Certainly they haven’t given up on this established game?

The answer is online. Gamblers know that they can enjoy bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a beer and cigarette and in the end, enjoy big jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course playing on the net will never replace the social aspect of going over to the bingo hall, but for a group of players the rules have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with little option.
