Much has been talked in the press not long ago about the bingo industry being hit as a result of the smoking ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge aid to help keep the industry afloat. But does the web variation of this quintessential game offer a reprieve, or might it never compare to its bricks and mortar equivalent?
Bingo is an age old game normally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. However the game recently had witnessed a recent increase in popularity with younger people opting to visit the bingo parlors instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the enforcement of the cigarette ban throughout Britain.
Players will no longer be able to smoke at the same time marking numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public place will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most common areas where folks enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo halls. Profits have plunged and the industry is absolutely struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they have not deserted this enduring game?
The answer is online. People realise that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a cocktail and cigarette and in the end, have a chance at huge prizes. This is a recent development and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course playing on the web can never replace the social aspect of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of men and women the rules have left many bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
