An abundance has been talked in the papers not long ago about the bingo industry struggling because of the anti smoking law in the UK. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive tax breaks to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. But does the internet version of this classic game offer a salvation, or might it never compare to its land based peer?
Bingo has been an classic game historically played by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game lately had experienced a recent resurgence in appeal with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo parlours instead of the clubs on a Friday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the introduction of the anti smoking law around United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 all public places will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular places where people like to puff on cigarettes.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already forbidden in the bingo parlours. Profits have plunged and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where did all the players go? Certainly they have not cast aside this established game?
The answer is on the internet. People realize that they can gamble on bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a beer and smoke and in the end, enjoy massive jackpots. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.
Of course playing on the internet can never replace the collective aspect of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of men and women the governing edicts have left a good many bingo enthusiasts with little option.
