Much has been reported in the papers not long ago about the bingo industry struggling as a consequence of the smoking ban in Britain. Things have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge tax cuts to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. However can the net adaptation of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or will it never compare to its land based equivalent?

Bingo has been an age old game normally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game recently had seen a recent resurgence in appeal with younger men and women deciding to go to the bingo halls rather than the clubs on a Friday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the enforcement of the anti smoking law across England and Wales.

Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes while marking off their numbers. From the summer of 2007 all public places will not be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favored areas where folks like to puff on cigarettes.

The outcome of the anti smoking law can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo halls. Numbers have dropped and the business is absolutely fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they haven’t cast aside this age old game?

The answer is on the internet. Players know that they can bet on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a cocktail and cigarette and in the end, enjoy massive jackpots. This is a recent development and has timed itself almost perfectly with the anti smoking law.

Of course wagering on on the web will never replace the communal part of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of players the law has left a number of bingo players with little option.
