Much has been stated in the press recently about the bingo industry struggling as a result of the anti smoking law in England. Things have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded big tax breaks to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However does the internet variation of this classic game offer a salvation, or might it not compare to its bricks and mortar kin?
Bingo is an familiar game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game recently had witnessed a recent return in acceptance with younger people opting to visit the bingo parlours instead of the discos on a Saturday night. This is all about to be reversed with the introduction of the smoking ban around UK.
Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes while marking off their numbers. From the summer of ‘07 all public places will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favored areas where many people like to smoke.
The results of the cigarette ban can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo parlors. Numbers have plunged and the industry is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Of course they haven’t deserted this ancient game?
The answer is online. Gamblers realize that they can participate in bingo using their computer while enjoying a drink and cigarette and still enjoy monstrous cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course playing online is unlikely to replace the social portion of going down to the bingo parlor, but for a group of people the law has left a number of bingo players with no alternative.
