A lot has been stated in the press not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the cigarette ban in England. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for huge aid to help keep the industry afloat. But can the internet adaptation of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or will it never compare to its bricks and mortar kin?
Bingo has been an ancient game historically enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game lately had undergone a recent return in acceptance with younger men and women opting to hit the bingo halls in place of the bars on a Saturday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the enacting of the cigarette ban across United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be permitted to smoke while marking numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public place will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favorite areas where many people like to puff on cigarettes.
The results of the smoking ban can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo halls. Profits have dropped and the industry is absolutely struggling for its life. But where did all the players go? Of course they haven’t cast aside this classic game?
The answer is on the internet. Players know that they can bet on bingo from their computer while enjoying a drink and cigarette and still enjoy monstrous cash rewards. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course gambling on on the net is unlikely to replace the social part of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the governing edicts have left a good many bingo players with no choice.
