Much has been reported in the press not long ago about the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the smoking ban in England. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for big tax breaks to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. However can the web variation of this classic game present a salvation, or might it never compare to its land based kin?
Bingo is an familiar game usually enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game of late had seen a recent resurgence in acceptance with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo parlors instead of the bars on a Friday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the enacting of the cigarette ban around England and Wales.
Players will no longer be allowed to smoke whilst marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public places will not be permitted to allow smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most popular areas where players like to smoke.
The outcome of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo halls. Profits have dropped and the industry is literally fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Of course they have not cast aside this established game?
The answer is online. Gamblers are now realizing that they can wager on bingo from their computer while enjoying a beverage and cig and still enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course playing on the net can never replace the communal part of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of players the governing edicts have left many bingo enthusiasts with little option.
