A lot has been stated in the press recently concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the cigarette ban in Britain. Things have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big tax cuts to help keep the industry afloat. But can the web version of this traditional game provide a reprieve, or might it never compare to its real life peer?
Bingo is an ancient game generally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game of late had experienced a recent return in popularity with younger members of society deciding to go to the bingo parlors rather than the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the introduction of the anti cigarette law throughout England and Wales.
No more will players be able to smoke at the same time dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 all public places will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most common places where many people like to puff on cigarettes.
The outcome of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plunged and the business is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where did all the players go? Certainly they have not forgotten this classic game?
The answer is on the net. Players know that they can enjoy bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a beer and cig and still have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened just about perfectly with the ban on smoking.
Of course playing on the web could never replace the communal part of going down to the bingo hall, but for a group of players the law has left many bingo enthusiasts with little option.
